Biden Banks on Democratic Outrage, Risking Deeper US Divisions

Prior to the November midterm elections, President Joe Biden is attempting to incite voters' outrage about the radicalism of Donald Trump and his supporters, even though the tactic runs the risk of escalating political tensions in the US.

In a prime-time speech delivered to the nation on Thursday from Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Biden emphasised the criticism he's recently used to characterise Trump supporters and his predecessor.

In reference to Trump's campaign slogan, "Make American Great Again," Biden stated that "Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans reflect an extremism that threatens the fundamental foundation of our republic."

In his remarks on Thursday, Biden was at his most abrasive. In a room with alarm-bell red lights and two Marines on parade rest, he marched to a podium from the entrance and read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

To separate "the majority of Republicans" from Trump and his supporters, whom he painted as harmful to the country, Biden went to great lengths, citing their attempts to rig the 2020 election and accusing them of inciting violence against their rivals.

‘Darkness and Despair’

He said, "They are a menace to our individual rights, the pursuit of justice, the rule of law, and to the very essence of this society. They support authoritarian governments and stoke the embers of political violence.

However, it seems like the message is getting through to the voters that Biden's party has to turn out in November. After running on the topic of abortion access, which the president claimed was the first of many rights Republicans could attack if they gained control of Congress, Democrats unexpectedly won recent special House elections in New York and Alaska.

Democratic Momentum

Biden and Democrats have emphasised the contrast between Republicans and Trump as a result of Trump's re-entry into the public eye following the FBI's search of his Mar-a-Lago residence for secret materials. They contend that this search demonstrates Trump's contempt for the law. The former president's comments on the FBI were described as "sickening" by Biden.
